Request for Instruction

Instructions:
Please submit requests at least one week in advance if possible, to allow us time to prepare for your session and customize it based on your students' needs.

1. Select your choice(s) from the Instruction Menu.
2. Complete all starred * items in the Contact and Class Information Sections.
3. Click on "Send the request" button at the bottom of the screen.

HOUSE FAVORITES

Walking Tours (30 minutes) – Students will get a tour of the Learning Commons and find out about important library services and materials, as well as other services available in the Learning Commons. Recommended for Freshmen. [outcomes]

May we suggest?
Library Jeopardy (20 minutes) – Add a side of Library Jeopardy to your walking tour. This fun, interactive game will reinforce everything your students learned in the tour, plus introduce some library and college trivia. [outcomes]

Catalog Searching (15-20 minutes) – Students will learn how to search the library catalog for information sources. Whether they’re looking for a DVD, CD, book or ebook, students will be able to find sources fast after attending this session. [outcomes]

Finding Articles in Library Databases (30 minutes) – Tired of students choosing the first 3 sources that appear in Google? In the Library Database session your students will learn how to find reliable, authoritative sources for their research projects. 2-3 library databases will be covered. Add 10 minutes for each additional database. [outcomes]

May we suggest?
Popular vs. Scholarly Sources (10 minutes) – Add this to your Library Database session and librarians will introduce your students to scholarly sources and explain how these sources are different from popular sources and when they should be used. [outcomes]

SIGNATURE DISHES

Academic Honesty Training (30 minutes) – In a fun and interactive game format, the class will play It’s a Question of Scruples and compete for prizes while discussing academic integrity and plagiarism avoidance. [outcomes]

Evaluating Information Sources (10 minutes) – Start your class off to an interactive and stimulating start with a discussion and “People Sort” about what makes a source reliable and how to ensure accurate facts and analysis. [outcomes]

MLA Documentation (20 minutes) – Students will use the MLA handout to create accurate citations of various types of resources by using the “Each Teach” method. [outcomes]


PLATES AND COMBOS

Enjoy these time-tested plates and combos. They are our most-requested items and are sure to please!

ENGL 1301 Current/Controversial issues plate (50+ minutes) - Students will enjoy a lively conversation with the librarian about choosing topics and brainstorming keywords. Databases covered include Opposing Viewpoints, CQ Researcher and ProQuest. Participating students leave sated with an inbox full of articles emailed to them. [outcomes]

ENGL 1302 Literary Criticism plate (50+ minutes) – Students will delve into the library’s literature resources to find literary criticism. Students will learn how to find critical articles in Literature Resource Center, JSTOR, Project Muse, and other library databases. Students will also discuss the value in searching for articles dealing with subjects related to their literary work in the absence of substantial critical reviews. [outcomes]

"The Anna" - ENGL 0307 Combo Meal (2 sessions: 30+ minutes and 50+ minutes) - Students go on a 30-minute walking tour at the beginning of the semester (a 10-minute exercise in recalling the areas of the Learning Commons can be included at no extra charge). The students return mid-semester to learn about researching career areas and colleges. [outcomes]

ENGL 0305 Book Club Special (50 minutes) – Assign your students to read one of our specially-selected books and we will come to your class to lead an engaging book discussion. All books in the list have multiple copies available in the library system so that your students have the option of checking out the book instead of buying it. ESL - “The Ruth” Plate (50 minutes) – In addition to our walking tour, students will participate in an interactive exercise involving use of the library’s magazine and newspaper collection. [outcomes]

ESL - Book Club Special (50 minutes) – Assign your students to read one of our specially-selected books and we will come to your class to lead an engaging book discussion. FACULTY SPECIALS

Personal Trainer – Invite a librarian to your office or another on-campus location and have a 30 minute one-on-one update on resources in your discipline or any other research topic of interest.

Personal Shopper – Writing a paper yourself? Need help with your research? Meet with a librarian to discuss your research needs and get a personalized research plan along with help accessing research resources outside the NHMCCD library system.


“OFF THE MENU”

Custom Creation – If you have a specific request, you are welcome to order a custom creation. Our librarians can prepare a menu to meet your specific needs. Please send us a copy of your assignment and any special requests and we will let you know how much of your class time you will need to set aside for your library research session. Also, if you have a great assignment idea but you’re not sure exactly how to turn it into a workable library research assignment, we can brainstorm with you to help you devise a stellar project for your students.
