Katy Prairie Restoration Committee
The Katy Prairie Restoration Committee was established as the College was being designed, to serve as an auxiliary committee to assist with environmental initiatives on campus.
Consisting of community leaders, in 2003 the committee established the “Putting Down Roots” campaign. Along with Harris County Commissioner Steve Raddack and Hewlett Packard who provided “in-kind” contributions, the committee successfully raised funds to place over 2,700 trees on campus.
Since then, the committee has continued to play an integral role in the planning and development of environmental projects on campus.
In 2006, students created a collaborative environmental interpretative project placing fifty plant identification signs around campus. Biology students identified native prairie grasses and plants, welding students created signs and geographical information systems (GIS) students geo-referenced the site creating a map of the sign locations.
